Digging

I'm spending the day in bed sick with not much to do so I figured I could dig around a bit and find some MTB gems buried on the web. I tried to avoid posting easy stuff to find, like images from popular forums, although in a couple of cases I got some of those too. I'm really most interested in early 1982-86 lugged steel frames, preferably ones with nice wide fork crowns. Also my preference is for production bikes since I feel like there are lots of neat early MTBs that you can get your hands on without breaking the bank buying "collector" custom bikes like a Ritchey or a Fat Chance. The web and forums are full of folks who have those bikes and there's a lot of info out there about them. In my experience there is far less info and interest about early production mountain bikes other than the Stumpjumper. I did include a section of Italian bikes which contrary to what I just said are both collectible and expensive, but still rad and not as well known.

  1. Yeah, these are the bikes I prefer to ride. Rigid frame mountain bikes. Or City bikes, whatever you call them. I don't like road bikes that much, nore hard tail or full susp. mountain bikes. They aren't good for the city. Some of them can take road bike components and 7speed rear wheels, I put a set of street tires on my Schwinn Probe(another good bike you should list here) and a with a 2/7 setup, was pretty swift. Not to mention its long tall frame, almost resembles a road bike frame.

I just picked up a Lotus Pegesus today about three hours ago. I like it. It's got a set of Crossroads tires on it and a double kickstand. The only thing I don't like is it's blue. It's got a handle bar mount on it like that Andy GIlmore

  2. Gilmour! My brother has a really rad early 80's Gilmour, bi-plane fork, hugggeee wheelbase, and it seems experimental as the toptube is slightly sloping down toward the headtube. I've gotta say, I love this blog, I can just sit her and admire the posts for hours. Cheers!!
